I think about how many students entered a new school for the very first time this year, just like my granddaughter, Adrienne.
There was so much apprehension leading up to this BIG event.
So much thought went into this day! Just the right outfit was carefully laid out, right down to the new socks and shoes. Every item with a name on it has been meticulously placed in her new, shiny bookbag, ready to sling over her shoulder as a reminder that a new school year with so much opportunity is finally here.
I’m sure the car ride seemed like an eternity to reach her new school, even though it is only 15 minutes from home. Finally, the car arrives at the entrance. My granddaughter quickly told her mother that she would only be kissing her cheek, as she is a 5th. grader now. (I guess that is the cool thing to do ~ I’m just grateful that she still respects her mother.)
Of course, there is no first day school picture that everyone wants. “Now, that’s not cool!” She strictly warns her parents.
This day is not just another important date circled on the calendar. This day sets the precedence for the whole school year. Is the school environment going to be an inviting place? Are teachers stern or friendly? Are there lots of smiling faces, both students and staff?
Showing compassion toward others goes a long way.
Compassion is something that is unspoken.
It can be as simple as giving a smile, taking the time to listen when spoken to, being the first to speak to a new face. Remember, how one perceives you is a lasting impression of what they will think of you. And, most importantly, you get just one chance to make a lasting impression.
Adrienne’s day went GREAT! All of her nervousness has been put to rest, she has made lots of new friends and even has a “favorite” teacher. She is excited to return for a second day and beyond.
