Introducing Debbie Guyer, VLR’s Founder
My name is Debbie Guyer, and I launched Visual Learning Resources as a way to support dedicated teachers and educators on their journey toward becoming great classroom leaders and advocates for children. If you’re a new teacher, a homeschooling parent or a seasoned educator, my goal is to provide you with an educational toolkit that allows you to amplify your lessons and ensure you can really connect with the students who may need that extra support.
Like a lot of people in this profession, I quickly knew what I wanted to do in life. As a child, I would often volunteer to help out at daycares and camps that worked with individuals with moderate to severe needs, and it was there that I found my passion for education.
At the young age of eight-years-old, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to help people. I wanted to change lives.
Since then, I’ve spent decades teaching elementary and middle school students as both a classroom teacher and special educator. Throughout my journey, I learned how to be a better teacher, and I quickly recognized how small changes in your approach can have dramatic consequences affecting student engagement and the quality of the education you are providing. I also realized that other teachers could utilize these same methods to help their own students succeed, and midway through my career, I moved from the classroom to the lecture hall to spend another 20 years behind the podium preparing the next generation of teachers.
Watching my own education students succeed as teachers has fueled my passion of wanting to help even more, and today, I hope to help teachers of all experience levels find the resources that I wish I had when I was just starting out.
It turns out that even teachers need good teachers to become the best they can be. And I could help them get there. It’s why I created Visual Learning Resources.
Changing Lives for the Better
I’ve been blessed to have many teaching opportunities throughout my career: speaking overseas, participating in a special education forum at Oxford University in England, and working at the state level to better educate students who are in special education. Granted, I’ve also earned a few accolades along the way; “Teacher of the year” via the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, “Special Education Teacher of the Year Award” for the State of Ohio and twice recipient of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards are just a few examples.
But while the awards look nice on paper, it’s my experiences with students and families who have kept me passionate about this career. Nothing can compare to seeing the face of a struggling educator light up again because they’re feeling confident and eager to get back into the classroom and make a difference. Not every day was easy, but it seems like every family I’ve met and event I’ve attended over the course of my career has had an impact and made me a better educator.
Today, my passion is to provide solid teacher video resources and strategies for educators entering the profession as well as veteran teachers who are looking for new and innovative teaching techniques. Visual Learning Resources is my gift to you to forever shape who you are and how you teach so you can begin that ripple of perpetual change you strive to create in the lives of others.
“Open your mouth for those who cannot speak, and for those who are left without help.”
