Preparing For A New School Year

www.visuallearningresources.com

Are you a person who likes to display a lot of color, especially the bright, bold primary colors? Are the walls covered with a lot of posters, etc.? We all want a “classroom” to be inviting. But how many signs and images we actually put on the walls are meaningful and even referred to throughout the school year?

Keep in mind that students who have ADD/ADHD can become distracted from too much stimuli in a room. This is called sensory overload. Did you know that the bold primary colors can increase anxiety levels in students with ADD/ADHD? Studies show the color red exhibits high energy and actually increases the heart rate. Even all white walls give an overall cold, stark feeling which can bring on anxiety. On the flip side, blue hues lower the heart rate and encourage calmness and one to focus better. The same is true with muted colors and pastel shades.

Maybe this blog has stirred up a bit more than preparing your classroom space for the upcoming year and you are now thinking about redecorating your home as well. Or, I’m sure several of you are agreeing because muted colors help you focus and keep anxiety at bay.

At the end of the day, just think of “all” the students you serve so everyone can have a GREAT start to a new school year. Who knows, this simple suggestion can even help you become more productive this year!
